Most artists create for only a brief moment in time, blazing like comets across a midnight sky then gone before the eye can even blink. That phenomenon once was known as "15 minutes of fame," but in the high-tech, speed-of-light 21st century, "15 seconds" feels closer to the mark. Yet even in a fickle world, woven from threads of endless fad and frivolity, there still emerge a talented few that transcends time and trends.
With nearly 15 years as a major label recording artist and six hit albums to his credit, Al Denson is that kind of artist. And with his Spring Hill debut, From This Day On, he stands at the apex of what is already one of the most formidable bodies of work in contemporary music.
The "wheels of heaven" started turning in Al’s head when a series of enthusiastically received high school concerts left him feeling that the Lord was not only smiling on his efforts in reaching young people for Christ, but in fact leading him down a new pathway in music and ministry. While never losing sight of the ongoing importance of encouraging and inspiring those who have already found a personal relationship with Christ, Al felt a compelling call to connect with all who were still lost. And it was obvious that America’s public schools were the largest—and largely untouched—fields in which he could do the labor to which the Lord was calling him.
Concentrating his concerts almost entirely on high school audiences, Al now finds himself doing as many as three high school assemblies in a day, presenting the teenagers with music and messages of the value of truth, honesty and good character. Making his own Christian faith perfectly clear-but restrained by law from proselytizing on public time-Al invites all to an evening concert at which he’s free to fully speak the Gospel.
"You’ve got to reach out to people where they are with the most powerful and impactive means and media you can, and build trust and a rapport," says Al. "And you have to hold their attention and entertain them too. Then you’ve opened their ears and their hearts to hear the whole message.
"This has all been so amazing," he concludes. "I can’t imagine what lies in store when the Lord finally calls me home, but I don’t have to wait for heaven to receive rewards. I get them every time a kid comes up to me and says, `I heard what you said, and I accepted Christ.’ You can’t ask for anything more or better than that."
